IT8 consists of a traditional woodworking project and then advances to an innovative program in the design and development of a machine. Basic skills taught consist of interpreting working drawings and skillfully selecting and manipulating materials such as wood, metal and plastics. Fasteners, hardware and finishes are also included in instruction. The students will first apply this knowledge to create a woodworking project utilizing nine power tools. Craftsmanship is stressed. During the first project, students are exposed to related information on gaining mechanical advantage using the six simple machines, hydraulic systems and electric motors. The students, working in teams, will apply lecture material to design and build a machine utilizing skills obtained from previous learning activities. The instruction will culminate in the Technology Challenge to test the machines.
8th Grade Industrial Technology Students will build an ancient coin display case for the Classics Department's collection. This in-class community service project gives our 8th graders a way to contibute to the Burroughs community. They will also create a Wood Species Learning Center, with examples of dozens of species for display in the Industrial Technology department. In addition, they will build their own customized Chess Boards with a built-in storage drawer. As if that wasn't enough, they will also design and build their own Sumo Robots. Quite the ambitious curriculum. Sumo matches commence in January.
